The NCC asks for a favour

You have to admire the nerve of the NCC.

The same organization that consistently says “no” to Ottawa whenever it needs a little help making the city better is asking for a favour.

NCC wants to help design Ottawa’s LRT stations

The National Capital Commission wants to team up with the city on some of the creative design for Ottawa’s light-rail transit stations.

NCC chief executive Marie Lemay has asked Mayor Larry O’Brien if the city would be interested. Lemay is still coming up with the possibilities, but mentioned a potential design competition or showcase involving each of the country’s provinces and territories.

Look, it may be a great idea but this is the same organization that has obstructed city council on every major recent file, from the LRT route to Lansdowne.

Sometimes you have to give a little to get a little.

This offer comes with no additional funds, only additional layers of approval.

Mayor O’Brien would be wise to reject this offer of “help” unless it is accompanied by a renewed, two-way commitment to cooperation from the NCC.

Probably seems a little silly, but I’d wager the NCC would be coming into these discussions with some cash to help build nice stations for the national capital region. That, coupled with the federal funding, gives them a reasonable case for having some input. Hopefully they’ll work co-operatively with the city, though, and help pay for stations worthy of the nation’s capital.

The NCC have stated that they aren’t bringing any cash to the table.

Yes the federal government is providing $600 million in funding but they provide “no strings” funding for dozens of projects around the country. Why should the NCC get input into Ottawa’s transit project but not anyone else’s?

I don’t have an issue with the concept, I just find it galling that the NCC obstructs Ottawa city council all the time but is now asking for input on something in which they have no right to input.
